Fire Resistant Fencing in Colorado
A wood fence attached to your house is a fuse. We replace and retrofit fencing with noncombustible metal, fiber cement, and steel-on-wood assemblies that stop fire before it reaches your siding.
Fire-resistant fencing uses noncombustible materials — metal, masonry, or fiber cement — so the fence cannot carry flame to your home. If a full replacement is out of reach, the highest-value fix is the section closest to your house. That is where a burning fence does its damage.
Why a burning fence takes the house with it
Combustible fencing is a frequent contributor to home loss in wildfire. The problem is not that the fence burns — it is where the fence goes. A wood privacy fence typically runs from the property line straight to the wall of the house, giving fire a continuous path of fuel that ends at your siding.
Boulder County's Wildfire Partners program describes three things that happen once a fence catches:
- Radiant heat from the burning fence ignites the siding or causes windows to fail.
- The fence throws embers and larger firebrands that blow against the home and start new ignitions.
- The fence acts as a fuse, drawing fire into direct contact with the structure.
Fences also threaten buildings they never touch. A fence on your property line may be the thing that ignites your neighbor's home, their shed, or an outbuilding on either side.
What the NIST fence study found
Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology burned residential fences and mulch beds across 187 outdoor experiments to measure how they spread fire. Their central finding: hazard was disproportionately higher when combustible objects burned together. A fence burning alone is a slow, survivable problem. A fence burning alongside other fuel is not.
Three results matter most for Colorado homeowners:
- Back-to-back fences produced the most intense flames of the entire project. Where two neighbors each built a fence along the property line, panels eight feet long and six feet tall were completely engulfed in as little as four minutes, and embers ignited the downwind target in nearly every one of those tests. Fences as far apart as three feet still produced large flames.
- Mulch at the base of a fence lets fire run its full length. Fire moved swiftly across beds of fine combustibles, which fed embers and ignited the fence along its entire run.
- An isolated fence burns slowly. Some stand-alone fence fires advanced less than three and a half feet in an hour — still dangerous under wind, but a fundamentally different problem.
NIST also notes that U.S. fire codes do not currently address how fences should be installed and maintained, which is why so little guidance reaches homeowners. Their recommendations include never doubling up on fences, keeping combustibles apart even across property lines, clearing debris from the space near and between fences, and replacing combustible landscape features with stone, steel, or cement where possible.

Choosing the right material
Not every "fire-rated" product performs the way homeowners expect, and one popular category performs worse than the wood it replaces.
Best: fully noncombustible
Metal, masonry, stone, brick, iron, and fiber cement will not carry flame. We build to this standard in metal, iron, and fiber cement wherever budget and design allow. If you want a masonry or stone wall, that is solid protection — you will just need a masonry contractor for it.
Acceptable: steel on wood framing
Steel panels on wood framing are a recognized lower-risk option, and often the most practical way to keep a fence's proportions while removing the continuous fuel surface.
Avoid: vinyl and plastic composite
Composites have tested worse than wood for ignition potential and flame length in some laboratory work. Vinyl and hard plastic composite are combustible, and Boulder County does not treat them as eligible for its fencing rebates.
Not a substitute: retardant paints and stains
Field-applied fire-retardant paints and stains are not a durable long-term solution, based on IBHS and NFPA research. They weather, and they need reapplication that rarely happens on schedule.

If you can't replace the whole fence
Most homeowners don't need to start over. The fence section touching your house does nearly all of the damage, so that is where the money goes first.
- Replace at least the first five feet of fencing that contacts the home with noncombustible material. Eight to ten feet is better.
- Where wood sections remain, keep a noncombustible surface within two feet of them — no wood mulch, dry weeds, leaves, pine needles, or debris.
- Never build a second fence alongside an existing one. If a neighbor's fence already runs parallel to yours, removing one is a bigger safety win than upgrading either.
- Keep gates and fence lines clear of exit routes, so a burning fence never blocks the way out.
- Talk to your neighbor. Both sides of a shared fence need to stay clear of kindling fuels for the work to hold.
