A 6-point home wildfire risk self-check
Walk your property and honestly assess each area below. If you answer "yes" to the risk in any item, that's a candidate for hardening — usually in this priority order.
- Roof & gutters. Class A rated? Any wood shake? Gutters full of dry debris? Edge and valley gaps?
- Vents & soffits. Are attic and crawlspace vents ember-resistant? Are eaves enclosed with non-combustible soffits?
- Siding & windows. Combustible siding (vinyl/untreated wood)? Single-pane windows that can fail under heat?
- Decks & attachments. Wood deck surface or framing? Open, debris-collecting space underneath? Combustible fences touching the home?
- The first five feet. Bark mulch, shrubs, or stored items against the foundation? Anything combustible in Zone 0?
- Defensible space. Dense vegetation and ladder fuels within 30 feet? Tree canopies touching the structure?
